Belgium Has A New King
On Sunday, July 21, 2013 King Albert abdicated and was replaced by his son, the new King Phillippe I . No foreign royals were present as King Albert had only announced his intentions a few weeks before. There was little time for elaborate preparations, though there was a parade as Sunday was National Day in Belgium. The new king, like his father, is a strong supporter of the European Union. The first Belgian king ascended the throne on July 21, 1831.
